Ledger of a physician of Portland, Oregon, containing a record of patients, their treatments, and costs incurred. Also includes some brief notes on weather and local conditions, as well as prescriptions and recipes for medications. Patients listed include people prominent in the early development of Portland, including: John Couch, William S. Ladd, Josiah Failing, Benjamin Stark, Stephen Coffin, Richard Hoyt, Cicero Hunt Lewis, and A.B. Hallock. John Heard Couch (1811-1870) was an Oregon pioneer, sea captain, merchant, a founder of the city of Portland, and progenitor of an important and influential Oregon family line. During the 1840s he sailed merchant ships financed by John Cushing from his hometown of Newburyport, Massachusetts with supplies for establishing a dry goods business in Oregon. Wilson, Robert Bruce, 1828-1887.

Robert Bruce Wilson (1828-1887) was a prominent physician involved with the early development of Portland, Oregon. Born in Portsmouth, Virginia, he studied medicine at the University of Virginia but was hindered in his occupation by an injury to his left eye. He came to California during the gold rush of 1849 and practiced medicine in San Francisco. After serving as surgeon aboard the coastal steamer Gold Hunter, Wilson settled in Portland in 1850.
